Benefactors and Bequests

Carwithen House and Gray House, 2008: Click to EnlargeCarwithen House and Gray House, 2008: Click to EnlargeFor generations, Saint Paul’s Parish has benefited from the generosity of many benefactors. Very significant bequests from the estates of Bill Carwithen and Velma Gray underwrote major parts of our 2007-2008 building project. Recent additions to the church are being funded in part by J. Reilly Lewis’ generous gift in memory of his mother, Dora Lewis, plus special gifts by a number of parishioners and a bequest by Mary Wolfskill.  Pillsbury Hall is an older example of a major project made possible by a large gift or bequest.

In recent years, several endowments that provide ongoing support for our music and Christian formation programs have come from parishioner bequests. Around the church, one will see stained glass windows and other features that were made possible over the years by the generosity of members and friends of St Paul’s, in some cases by bequests. Many of these are examples of planned giving that our parish continues to enjoy. Planned gifts – also known as legacy gifts - are given in response to a deep love of God, an affection and concern for his Church, and a desire to support its continuing work. The Legacy Society provides an opportunity for donors to give witness to their good stewardship.

The Parish Endowments

The Parish Endowments exist to support (i) capital needs of the parish; (ii) outreach ministries and grants; (iii) seed money for new ministries and special one-time projects; and (iv) such other purposes as are specifically designated by donors to the parish whose gifts are included in the Parish Endowments.  Accordingly, parishioners and friends of Saint Paul’s have left funds to our parish for special purpose endowments. These gifts for the future development of the parish's ministry are subject to the most careful stewardship. The corpus of each fund is invested under the supervision of a quasi-independent Endowment Board named by the Vestry and subject to special investment rules, and the earnings of each fund are used to realize the purposes of that fund. In addition to these special purpose endowments, there is a General Endowment the earnings of which also are to be used “to enable St. Paul’s Parish to fulfill more completely its mission by developing its ministries beyond what is possible through its annual operating funds.” Here are our current special endowed funds, with how they are put to work for the advancement of Saint Paul’s and its mission:

  • Birchby Music Endowment, initiated by funds given in the late 1970s in memory of our late organist and choirmaster, E. Douglas Birchby, and used for the support of music in connection with the worship of the parish.
  • Father Richards Memorial Scholarship Fund, started from memorial gifts for our late rector, the Rev’d Fr James Richards, in the mid-1970s and used to fund scholarships for seminarians.
  • Ritchie Memorial Endowment Fund, started by funds given in the late 1980s in memory of our late music director, J. Marcus Ritchie, and used for the support of musical events, such as recitals, concerts, and special services, in St. Paul’s Church.
  • Outreach Endowment, begun with funds raised for this purpose as a part of the One Glorifying Voice Capital Campaign in the 1990s, used to support outreach activities.
  • Matthew Rutkowski Music Fund, initiated with a bequest by the late Matthew Rutkowski in the late 1990s and used for instrumental musicians for special services, concerts, and recitals, and for sponsoring instrumental or chamber music recitals to raise money for parish outreach programs.
  • Bishop Board Music Fund, from a bequest in 2003 by the late Robert B. Board and used to support the music ministry of St. Paul’s.
