Fellows-in-Residence Program

The Fellows program has two goals: sharing St. Paul’s rich liturgical, musical, human, and pastoral resources with clergy and lay colleagues, and receiving their gifts in return.

All Fellows will be welcomed warmly into the community of St. Paul’s and will have at least one day off a week for purely recreational purposes, as well as time for pursuing writing, research, or other projects not directly related to the day-to-day ministry of the parish, but which might be shared in some way with the parish, either in the course of the residency or afterward. A recent major building project has provided guest quarters for Fellows and visitors, and from February to August 2011 the rectory will be available for Fellows during the Rector’s sabbatical.

The Program is divided into three areas: Fathers in Christ, Teachers in Christ, and Servants in Christ. The first is specifically for men functioning sacramentally at St. Paul’s, while the others are open to all, both lay and ordained, men and women, of any Nicene Christian tradition.

Transitional and vocational deacons may apply but inquiry should be made with the Program Director in advance of application.

The Teachers in Christ and Servants in Christ program areas are open to all applicants, with the expectation that they have been baptized with water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and that they do not hold or teach doctrine contrary to that contained in the Nicene Creed and Definition of Chalcedon.

They may or may not already be experienced in the Anglo-catholic tradition, but they must have significant experience and gifts that would be put to good use at St. Paul’s. Fellows should be either clergy or lay people who not only have something to offer the community, but who also have specific learning goals that can best be met within an Anglo-catholic context, whether they are at the very beginning of their ministries or are already seasoned practitioners.

Fellows are expected not to engage in polemics from the pulpit on any side of a current debate but are free elsewhere when appropriate to make their personal views known charitably, irenically, and pastorally. Applicants with theological concerns are encouraged to speak with the Program Director before applying.

A good singing voice is essential to functioning well within the liturgy at St. Paul’s. If called to interview, you will be asked to chant some portions of our liturgy, either over the phone or by submitting a recording. Prospective applicants can use these mp3 music files to get a sense of the musical demands of serving as a celebrant, officiant, or deacon in our sung liturgies. These files are courtesy of Fr. Thomas Williams, our inaugural Fathers in Christ Fellow-in-Residence. It is not necessary to possess the level of professional excellence that Fr. Williams demonstrates, but to be comfortable with and competent in sung liturgy.Reredos Detail: (Photo: Laurita Liles)Reredos Detail: (Photo: Laurita Liles)
