Overview
Meets Sundays at 10:30 to 11:00 am in the Dining Hall
October 14 to December 16, 2007, and January 13 to March 9, 2008

The Rector's Forum is a weekly class led by Father Sloane and guest speakers.  Normally a fairly large group—and thus less "interactive" than other small groups—with teachings on a variety of topics which seek to cover "the basics:" the Book of Common Prayer, Anglicanism, church history, Scripture, Rule of Life, spiritual healing, sin and forgiveness, prayer, and issues of church and society.  A good introduction to Christian Formation for adults at Saint Paul's. Ideal for those who are unable to commit to regular or extended classes or groups.

Note: The Rector’s Forum meets for only six months of the year to allow in the other six months the important opportunity in our far-flung parish for fellowship after the 9:00 am Mass.

Dancing With God by Jay Emerson Johnson
Anglican Christianity and the Practice of Hope

Fr. Jay Johnson has a M.Div. from Nashotah House and a Ph.D. in Systematic and Philosophical Theology from the Graduate Theological Union. Fr. Johnson has been a friend of Fr. Sloane since his seminary days and it would be true to say they remain friends even though at relatively opposite ends of the theological political spectrum! Nonetheless, Fr. Sloane commends this book to our attention at a time when “Hope” is in short supply in too many clerical circles. This study also complements the work of TFCC in its focus on theology as the accessible work of all God’s people.

This surprising choice for study at the Rector’s Forum should guarantee some lively reactions and discussions.

Dancing With God by Jay Emerson Johnson (Morehouse Publishing). Available through Amazon.com.

(No class December 23 to January 6)

January 13 to February 3, 2008 “The Anglican Communion Today ... and Tomorrow?”

In this four-week series, Fr. Humphrey will assist us in looking at the potentially divisive issues facing the Anglican Communion and putting them in a wider and solid theological context. Short presentations will be followed by the opportunity for questions and discussion.

February 10 to
March 9
“Sweet and Blessed Country: The Christian Hope for Heaven” (Fr. Sloane)

In this day and age there is (from an orthodox Christian view) a lot of nonsense written about the afterlife! In this book, Fr. John Saward, Fellow of Greyfriars Hall, Oxford, gives us not only an orthodox theology, but also an attractive, fascinating and winsome account. As we prepare for the celebration of the Paschal Mystery by which we pass from death to life, it will be good to have our sights on heaven as our goal.

Sweet and Blessed Country: The Christian Hope for Heaven, by John Saward (New York, Oxford University Press, 2005) $19.95 hardback. Available through Amazon.com.
