Notices for the week of August 29, 2010

Today

The altar flowers are given by Linna Barnes and Chris Mixter to the greater glory of God and in memory of James  A. Barnes.

We love babies and children at St. Paul’s!  Children of all ages are welcome at all services but, if you need it, our Nursery staffed by trained workers is available for children through age five on Sunday mornings from 8:30 AM—1:30 PM, as well as during special services at various times of year.  Ask an usher if you need help finding the Nursery, which is located through the Atrium on the first floor near the restrooms.  While many parents of infants prefer the rear of the church with its space for standing and bouncing, the left front is a good area for older kids to sit because of its unobstructed views of the choir and sanctuary—and parents like it for its easy access to the Nursery and restrooms directly through the double doors to the right of the Lady Altar.

Newcomers’ Forum today: Are you new to St. Paul’s?  Would you like to find out more about opportunities in the parish?  You are invited to attend the Newcomers’ Forum today from 10:30 until 11:00 AM.  The Forum will be held in the Guild Room, which is up the short flight of steps from the Atrium and down the hall to the last room on the left.  If you have any questions, please contact Susan Granum at SusanGranum@gmail.com or 202-244-4611.

Carpe Deum, St. Paul’s 20/30s group, meets tonight at 7:00 PM in the Common Room.

Vacations: Robert McCormick will return to the parish on September 2. Frederick Murdock is on vacation through September 21.  Melva Willis will be on vacation September 3 through 10.

This Week

Hic et Nunc (“Here and Now”), formerly known as The Inner Room, will meet on Monday at 7:30 PM in the Carwithen Parlor and in the Church afterwards for Silent Prayer and Compline.

The new Pilgrims Team will meet at the Rectory for a working dinner on Tuesday at 6:30PM.

Jem (James) Lowther, who recently graduated from Eton and will be going to Oxford University in the Fall of 2011, will spend just under four months of his “gap year” with us as Organ Scholar.  Jem arrives on September 2, and returns to the UK on December 27.  He will be staying in the Carwithen Lounge.  Please welcome him warmly to St. Paul’s.

Upcoming

Youth Ministry at St. Paul’s—2010-11 School Year:  Here are the dates to mark on your calendars.  More details are going out by email to Journey through Scriptures (Middle School) and Ponticus (High School) students.  If you have not received it, contact Bob Bear at morewind@comcast.net.

  • Sunday, September 5. For JTS and Ponticus students interested in the Discovery Trip Cruise to Tangier Island on September 25 (see below), we will be collecting the $40 cost (make checks payable to “Robert Bear”).  Charlene Mui will be collecting the checks in the Atrium after the 9:00 AM Mass.  If you are not going to be in church that day, a parent must contact Charlene Mui at 703-979-0191 before September 5.  Space on the trip is very limited and we need to register as a parish ASAP or everyone will miss out, so this is a no excuse deadline.
  • Sunday, September 12.  Registration for all classes (age 3 through 12th grade) will take place following the 9:00 AM Mass in the classrooms downstairs.  ALL are welcome to visit and join in the welcoming festivities.
  • Sunday, September 19.  Classes start following the 9:00 AM Mass in the classrooms downstairs.  They continue Sundays thereafter through the school year except as otherwise announced.Saturday, September 25.  JTS and Ponticus students will have the opportunity to take part in a Diocesan cruise and discovery day on a reconstructed sailing skipjack to Tangier Island.  Skipjacks are fishing vessels unique to Chesapeake Bay used for commercial oyster fishing. This will be a fun cruise as well as an opportunity to renew our commitment to preserve the creation that God gave us by learning about this unique way of life.  Trip departs from St. Paul’s at 7:30 AM sharp (the boat waits for no one), and we return about 8:30 PM.  More details in the email going out to JTS/Ponticus parents and students.

The parish office will be closed on Labor Day, Monday September 6. The morning service schedule will be 7:45 AM Morning Prayer and 8:00 AM Mass.

Pilgrims in Christ.  Are you new to St. Paul’s?  Are you a longtime parishioner seeking further formation and a chance to meet some new St. Paul’s people?  Are you curious about what Pilgrims in Christ is all about?  Are you seeking to be baptized, confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church?  If so, you are invited to attend the Pilgrims introductory dinner on Wednesday, September 8!  We will have a potluck hosted by Pilgrims alums in the upstairs dining hall at 6:30 PM following the 6:00 PM Mass.  Fr. Sloane and the Pilgrims Team will then give a brief description of the course.  If you have any questions, please see the parish website (www.saintpaulskstreet.com) under Formation, Pilgrims in Christ—or contact Fr. Sloane at 202-337-2020 ext. 12 or Edie Davis at edavis008@hotmail.com or 301-277-6545.   Thank you!

Pilgrims Alumni Invited to the annual Introductory Dinner September 8:  Pilgrims in Christ alumni, join us for a reunion dinner and welcome to prospective members of the 2010-11 Pilgrims class on Wednesday, September 8 at 6:30 PM in the Dining Hall.  Bring your favorite potluck dish (or cash donations are welcome).  Please RSVP to this year’s dinner chair, Sylvia Rortvedt at srortvedt@aol.com.

Religion/Science Book Group resumes meeting on Tuesday, September 14 from 7:00 to 8:00 PM in the Common Room.   We will continue our study of "God After Darwin: A Theology of Evolution" by John F. Haught, available at Amazon for $16.59.  Haught is a theologian at Georgetown University.  He presents a fascinating account of how Darwin changed the way many Christians view our Creator.  He offers cogent ideas on how evolution theory reconciles with Christianity.

Holy Land Pilgrimage Possibilities:  Thinking about visiting the Holy Land on pilgrimage?  There are three potential options in view.  Our neighbors at Christ Church, Georgetown are planning a trip November 16-28, 2010; a Diocesan pilgrimage planned for December 8-20, 2010, which Bishop Chane will lead together with Canons Peterson and Qumri; and the possibility of a St. Paul’s pilgrimage October 17-29, 2011, with Canon Qumri as the guide.  Both the Diocesan and St. Paul’s itineraries include Jordan as well as Israel and the West Bank.  The price is also roughly comparable, with land arrangements on the order of $2000 in addition to airfare.  If you are interested, please e-mail Ann Korky at akkorky@gmail.com indicating which trip (Christ Church, Diocese, or St. Paul’s) you believe you might like to join

 General

Our prayerful condolences to Adrienne Hensley and her family upon the recent death of her mother, Phyllis.

Anyone who might be interested in serving on the Seminarian Committee for our new seminarian from VTS, Matthew Wright, please contact Fr. Sloane as soon as possible.

Do you know a boy or girl who likes to sing?  In a few weeks’ time, our boys’ and girls' choirs will begin the new season, and this is a perfect time for new boys and girls (age 7 and older) to join our renowned choirs.  Spaces are available for three new boys and three new girls.

Nolan Peters, one of our boy choristers, will be singing the treble solos for the Wolf Trap production of Lord of the Rings/Return of the King on September 10 and 11.  The movie will be projected onto the large screen, and live music will be provided by full orchestra, children and adult choirs, and vocal soloists.  Tickets are available through the Wolf Trap Box office.

St. Paul’s “We Sing of God” Submitted for Grammy Nomination:  Do you know anyone, anywhere, who might be a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS–the Grammy Awards people)?  Parish choir and NARAS member Will Stewart has submitted “We Sing of God” for nomination for a Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance; now we need NARAS members to vote to nominate the recording.  If nominated, Academy members will then have the opportunity to vote from a much more limited field to decide who wins the award in the above-named category. Securing a nomination will require a concerted effort on our part to bring our recording to the Academy members’ attention. Please contact your musical friends to see if they qualify, and, if so, urge them to consider nominating our recording.

Please kindly refrain from posting notices on doors and walls with scotch tape.  Please use the various notices boards at the entrances and in the Pillsbury passageway.

Adult Volunteer Opportunities for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd: The CGS program is looking for a candidate to take the level I CGS training this year and to make a several-year commitment to be a catechist.  You will receive much support, friendship, and appreciation from your fellow catechists and your rewards for this incredibly important ministry would be manifold and profound.  Also, as CGS is a Montessori-based program, lessons are given based on hands-on teaching materials. We could use several adult volunteers to put the finishing touches on some of these materials.  If you like to do crafty kinds of things without going to confession for them, this could be for you!  We have supplies and finishing directions.  If you are interested in becoming a catechist or in helping produce some materials, please see Mark Pierzchala or write to MarkPierzchala@cs.com.

You may have noticed that the copper downspouts adjacent to our new K Street entrance have been stolen. We are in contact with local authorities regarding the situation.
